Our Beginnings

Child Nursery Centers has a rich and long history of service to the Community.

In 1897, fourteen visionary Colorado Springs women founded the Day Nursery Association, now known as the Child Nursery Centers. One of our founders was Alice Bemis Taylor, who moved to Colorado Springs in the late 1800s for health reasons. The Bemis family became known for their philanthropy and contributions that helped shape the cultural landscape of the community.

Mrs. Taylor had a keen interest in architecture and a strong desire to bring beauty and elegance into the lives of those who had little or none. With this in mind, she built the Historic Day Nursery located at 104 E. Rio Grande, which was dedicated in December 1923, as a tribute to her mother and as a permanent facility for less fortunate young children. The dedication reads "to all mothers and all children." Mrs. Taylor gave the building and the land to the Day Nursery.
